For many years, research related to bird nutrition has focused on different dietary components that improve productive efficiency and are not expensive, such as antibiotic growth promoters. These are compounds used for therapeutic purposes to increase the health and welfare of animals, or for prophylactic purposes. Aiming to increase growth range and achieve more efficient conversion rates.\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-97133 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/gallinas-191x300.jpg\" alt=\"Stevia\" width=\"191\" height=\"300\" \/>\r\n\r\nHowever, due to the emergence of microorganisms resistant to antibiotics and the presence of residues in poultry meat or eggs, their use in animals of productive interest has been restricted.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>This is reflected in the increase in national and international regulations, which have restricted the use of various antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) (<em>Gaggia et al<\/em>., 2010; \u00a0<em>Grashorn<\/em>, 2010; \u00a0<em>Huyghebaert et al.,<\/em> 2011; \u00a0<em>Hong et al.,<\/em> 2012; \u00a0<em>Allen et al.,<\/em> 2013; <em>\u00a0Pal et al.,<\/em> 2015; \u00a0<em>Bauwens,<\/em> 2016; FAO, 2016; <em>\u00a0Gaddet et al<\/em>., 2017).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nThis has opened the door for additives known as<strong> <span style=\"color: #666699;\">natural growth promoter (NGPs) <\/span><\/strong>which generate better productive yields in animals through various mechanisms. Most of which are closely linked to better intestinal health.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>In this way, natural growth promoters guarantee safety and their residues are eliminated in avian by-products. Which also allows their export in accordance with current legislation (<em>Grashorn<\/em>, 2010; \u00a0<em>Hong et al.,<\/em> 2012; \u00a0<em>Pal et al.<\/em> , 2015; \u00a0<em>Bauwens,<\/em> 2016; FAO, 2016; <em>\u00a0Gaddet et al<\/em>., 2017).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nThe aim of this review is <strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">to broaden the knowledge about the use of natural growth promoters<\/span><\/strong> in poultry production. With a special focus on Stevia, as a possible alternative of natural origin to antibiotic growth promoters. Due to the fact that it has been shown to have an<strong> <span style=\"color: #008080;\">intimate relationships witht their poductive efficiency.<\/span><\/strong>\r\n\r\nIntestinal health not only involves the digestive system but also the immune system associated with the intestine and the intestinal microbiota. All of these, interact through different mechanisms, tending to achieve\u00a0 intestinal homeostasis.\r\n\r\nDifferent investigations agree that the interaction of these three elements (digestive system, immune system associated with the intestine and intestinal microbiota) are<strong> <span style=\"color: #008080;\">crucial in the first weeks of life<\/span><\/strong> of commercial birds. When the growth and development of the digestive system, and especially the intestine occurs.\r\n\r\nTogether with this event, in the first weeks of the <strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">bird&#8217;s life the microbiota colonizes the different portions of the intestine<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and establishes this interaction with the digestive system and with the immune system associated with the intestine (<em>Bar Shira et al<\/em>., 2005; \u00a0<em>Friedman et al<\/em>., 2005; \u00a0<em>Peralta et al<\/em>., 2016).\r\n\r\nImmune maturation is the last event that occurs in the first weeks of life. The microbiota and the different components of the bird&#8217;s diet are amongst its most most important stimuli.\r\n\r\nTherefore, research related to the different dietary additives of natural origin, which improve intestinal health are essential.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #339966; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Use of Stevia in broiler chickens<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\nA study was conducted with 15-day-old broiler chickens.
