{"id":11389,"date":"2022-12-19T15:03:24","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T14:03:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/socialagri.com\/agriFM\/?post_type=podcast&#038;p=11389"},"modified":"2022-12-19T15:03:24","modified_gmt":"2022-12-19T14:03:24","slug":"methane-and-the-biogenic-carbon-cycle","status":"publish","type":"podcast","link":"https:\/\/socialagri.com\/agriFM\/podcast\/methane-and-the-biogenic-carbon-cycle\/","title":{"rendered":"Methane and the biogenic carbon cycle"},"content":{"rendered":"<strong>Ruminants<\/strong>\u00a0(such as cows, sheep and goats) <b>are often considered big contributors to climate change due to their methane (CH<\/b><sub style=\"font-weight: bold\">4<\/sub><b>), emissions.<\/b>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-109103\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/right-arrow-7-300x300.png\" alt=\"Methane\" width=\"30\" height=\"30\" \/>While this is true,\u00a0<strong>it is actually part of an important natural cycle<\/strong> that has been occurring since the beginning of life, <strong>known as the biogenic carbon cycle<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"subtitulos\"><strong>Biogenic Carbon Cycle<\/strong><\/div>\r\nThe biogenic carbon cycle <strong>focuses on the ability of plants to absorb and sequester carbon<\/strong>.\r\n\r\nPlants have the <strong>unique ability to remove carbon dioxide (CO2)<\/strong> from the atmosphere and deposit that carbon in their leaves, roots, and stems while releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-119297 size-full\" title=\"plantas-carbono\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/plantas-carbono.jpg\" alt=\"Methane\" width=\"513\" height=\"236\" \/>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;color: #000000\"><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/right-arrow-7-300x300.png\" width=\"15\" height=\"15\" \/><\/strong><\/span><strong>This process is known as photosynthesis and is fundamental to the <a href=\"https:\/\/clear.ucdavis.edu\/explainers\/biogenic-carbon-cycle-and-cattle#:~:text=The%20biogenic%20carbon%20cycle%20centers,released%20back%20into%20the%20atmosphere.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">biogenic carbon cycle<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\r\nWhen <strong>plants<\/strong> perform <strong>photosynthesis<\/strong>, \u00a0carbon is \u00a0mainly <strong>converted into<\/strong> <strong>cellulose<\/strong>, which is a carbohydrate and one of the main building blocks of plants.\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-119219 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/cadena-glucosa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"89\" \/><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>Cellulose<\/strong><\/span> turns out to be the world&#8217;s<strong> most abundant organic compound. <\/strong>It is found in: <em>Grasses, Shrubs, Crops, Trees,<\/em> etc.\r\n\r\nCellulose content is particularly high in grasses and shrubs found in marginal lands. These are usually areas where cereal grains and other edible crops for human consumption cannot be grown.\r\n\r\nTwo-thirds of all agricultural land on the planet is marginal, filled with cellulose-rich grasses that are undigestible for humans.\r\n<div class=\"opiniones\" style=\"padding-left: 120px\">However, guess who can digest the cellulose found in the grasses and shrubs of marginal lands?<\/div>\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-119300 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ganado-rumiante.jpg\" alt=\"Methane-cattle \" width=\"473\" height=\"426\" \/>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"destacado\">\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>Ruminants ingest this plant material, obtain energy from it and recycle cellulose&#8230; and as a result, they also ingest carbon!<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<strong>Ruminants are<\/strong> made to digest cellulose. They <strong>consume grasses<\/strong> and other plants which are high in cellulose and are capable of<strong> assimilating the carbon stored in cellulose<\/strong> through <strong>enteric fermentation<\/strong>.\r\n\r\nThey can use this carbon to <strong>cover vital functions<\/strong> such as growth, <strong>milk production<\/strong> and other <strong>physiological and metabolic processes<\/strong>.\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>As a result of <span style=\"color: #339966\">cellulose consumption<\/span>, livestock lose carbon in the form of CH4 and therefore return the carbon sequestered by plants into the atmosphere.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrinews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/right-arrow-7-300x300.png\" width=\"15\" height=\"15\" \/><strong>After approximately 10 years,<\/strong>\u00a0CH<sub>4 <\/sub>\u00a0(methane) breaks down (hydroxyl oxidation) and <strong>is converted back into CO2 [CH<sub>4<\/sub> &#8211;&gt; CO<sub>2<\/sub> + H<sub>2<\/sub>O]<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<strong>Once converted to <sub>CO2<\/sub><\/strong>, <strong>plants<\/strong> can uptake it once more through photosynthesis <strong>and fix that carbon into cellulose<\/strong>&#8230;.\r\n\r\nRead full article <a
